Surgery
This type of surgery will take from 3 to 4 days. The first day will be devoted to the operation itself. The second, third and probably fourth days will be for recovery, depending upon the patient’s evolution. The surgery will be performed under either general anesthesia, or epidural or spinal anesthesia, depending on the patient’s medical and psychological conditions. These will be defined by the internist and anesthesiologist’s presurgical assessments along with the required evaluation exams. The decision about what type of anesthesia is to be used will be taken with complete patient approval, and on certain occasions mixed anesthesia will be used to handle postoperatory pain through different methods.
The next step will be the clearance for the surgery execution after receiving all the detailed procedure data, performance and risks.
The surgical procedure will take an average of 3 hours from the patient’s entrance into the operating room until his release to recovery and hospitalization. This procedure consists in the exchange or replacement of the affected joints and the inclusion of a metallic prosthesis incapable of producing any reaction inside the human body and a mobile part made out of different materials according to the patient’s needs. These may be either totally metallic or metallic and Polyethylene or ceramic.
